Summer Programs

In order to ensure the continued safety of our students and teachers, we will not be running our Co-Curricular Summer Camp, Kinder Readiness or Summer School programs this summer (Summer 2020). This is a difficult decision for us because of the impact it has on our families. However, we do not feel that we can run a safe and fun program for our scholars while practicing social distancing. We will offer full refunds to any families who have already registered for a summer program. Those refunds will begin being processed on May 13th. If you have any questions specifically related to refunds, please reach out to Verona Labrador at Programs@GreatHeartsTX.org.

In the meantime, free Virtual Athenaeum YouTube videos will still be available to all families. You can access those videos by clicking on this link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8UyUmxS7VL0eo0tuQzYtSr77hEr8nn_1

We continue to prepare for Fall 2020 After-School Athenaeum and look forward to having an exciting year with our scholars. Registration for the Athenaeum After-School Program and Homework Club begins May 12th.

Summer Programs consist of Kinder Readiness for new incoming kindergarten students, Summer School for grades 1st-5th, and Summer Camp for grades 1st-5th.

Kinder Readiness

The Kindergarten Readiness summer program is designed to help students transition to the classroom community with ease. Students will practice fundamental skills, following directions, and learn teacher expectations. They will learn the joy that comes from learning to demonstrate self-control, build confidence through accomplishing new tasks, and start making new friends. Our veteran teachers will model everything they will need to know about what it means to be a GHWH Scholar! Students will wear the GHWH school uniform as outlined in the family handbook and bring a snack.

Students may be dropped off as early as 7:45am. The program begins at 8:15am and ends at 12:15pm.

Cost: $159 per week per scholar plus a one-time $25 registration fee

Summer School: Spalding and Singapore Math

The Spalding & Singapore Summer School is for current and new to Great Hearts students who would benefit from work with experienced Great Hearts teachers.

Students may be dropped off as early as 7:45am. The program begins at 8:15am and ends 12:15pm Monday through Friday. Scholars attending this program have the option to register for Summer Camp for the afternoon at a discounted price.

Current Scholars:

SPALDING- Students will review their understanding of Spalding phonograms through daily OPR (Oral Phonogram Review) and WPR (Written Phonogram Review). Students will set up a Spalding notebook to practice frequently misspelled words, rules, and markings for the previous grade level Ayer’s List. Teachers will challenge students to improve letter formation through daily practice of manuscript and cursive handwriting. Students will also work on reading fluency and decoding to improve overall accuracy and comprehension.

SINGAPORE MATH- Students will use the CPA model (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract) to deeply explore the “why” behind challenging math concepts foundational to the previous year’s level. Students will practice basic math facts and explore concepts like number sense, number bonds, place value, word problems, math computation, mental math, fractions, and geometry.

FAQ:

Should I sign my student up for both weeks? While the lesson plans for both weeks will be the same, our teachers will assess those students returning for a second week to ensure they are placed in the best group to meet their needs. Some students may benefit from a second week to master the same material while other students would benefit from a more rigorous challenge.

Can my student stay all day? Yes, while Summer School is only a half-day program, students attending Summer School can register for the afternoon of Summer Camp as an add-on item. Lunch is not provided, so those staying will need to pack a lunch and an afternoon snack.

Cost:
Summer School Only:$189 per week per scholar plus a one-time $35 registration fee (includes Summer T-Shirt)

Summer School + Summer Camp add-on: $300 per week per scholar ($325/per week after May 1st).

Summer Camp

Our full day summer camp is reminiscent of traditional camps from our childhood with the same quality you have come to expect from Great Hearts. Each week, scholars will experience hands-on, engaging activities in fine arts, reading, writing, crafts, science, math, and history – all designed to inspire creativity and keep skills sharp over the summer. Each Camp also offers guest presenters, camp songs, and games while fostering lasting friendships.

Week 1 (June 1-5) ~ Seafaring for the Daring

Join us for a week of seafaring, mermaids, pirates, oceanography, and more. Every day, campers will compete in head-to-head style games, learn sea songs, and partake in skits. On the last day, crews will board the ships they built with their own hands and have an epic battle on the high seas. They will also perform songs and camp skits for parents and guests.

Week 2 (June 8-12) ~ Adventure Week

Campers will compete in a plethora of hands-on and problem-solving activities. They will track animals on safari, explore and create their own caves, compete in athletic events, and challenge their survival skills with exciting STEM activities. Campers will also sing songs, play silly games, and perform skits.  Adventure Week will culminate in an Olympics Game Day complete with award ceremony.  Family and friends are encouraged to come and support their campers.

Cost: $225 per week per scholar ($250 per week per scholar after May 1st) plus a one-time $35 registration fee (Includes Summer t-shirt)
